Let’s get to know him…
What’s your job title?
Deputy Inspection Technical Manager / Inspection Engineer.
What led you to this career?
My passion for engineering naturally led me to pursue a career in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). After leaving school, I went on to earn an HNC in NDT, followed by a degree later in my career. Over the past 15+ years, I’ve continuously sought opportunities to grow, learn, and develop my technical skills. When this role became available, it felt like the perfect alignment of my qualifications, hands-on experience, and long-standing commitment to professional development. It was a clear next step in my journey to contribute meaningfully while continuing to evolve in the field.
What does your job role involve?
As Deputy Technical Inspection Manager, I support the Inspection Technical Manager by overseeing compliance with inspection standards and legal regulations such as PSSR, PED, API, and ASME. I lead the development and maintenance of technical inspection procedures, ensure personnel competency and training, and uphold Sonomatic’s ISO 17020 accreditation. I also act as a competent person for mechanical pressure system inspections and serve as the Tank Inspection Focal Point for the RAIS Division. I also support Inspections as an Inspection Engineer (RG2 Cat 2), I carry out inspections across pipelines, vessels, and tanks, supporting both ad hoc and contract work within the RAIS Division. I also deputise for Senior Inspection Engineers when required, contribute to tender assessments, and lead or support investigations into non-conformance issues, ensuring effective resolution and continuous improvement.
What is the most exciting part of your job/what are you looking forward to in your new role?
I’m really looking forward to collaborating with the wider Sonomatic team, which gives me the opportunity to gain exposure to all aspects of the business, from advanced drone inspections to complex tank assessments. I’m excited to learn from the wealth of technical expertise within the team, expand my existing knowledge, and continue developing professionally. At the same time, I’m eager to contribute my own experience to support Sonomatic’s ongoing growth and success.
What accomplishment have you made in your career so far that you are proud of?
I’m proud of my journey from an NDT trainee to securing my current role, which reflects my dedication and growth. I’m equally proud of mentoring several trainee NDT engineers who have gone on to achieve great success in their careers—seeing their progress has been truly rewarding.
Who inspires you and why?
My greatest inspiration comes from my family and community. I’m also inspired by the everyday leaders around us—dedicated fathers, supportive neighbours, and hardworking colleagues. I find great value in learning from their journeys, understanding how they’ve grown in their careers, and seeking their guidance. Their experiences continually shape my perspective and drive me to grow both personally and professionally.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
Outside of work, I enjoy exploring the Scottish outdoors, particularly hill walking. I have a strong passion for learning, especially in the areas of science, culture, and history. That said, what I value most is the simple pleasure of home comforts and spending quality time with my family. It may sound mundane, but it’s truly what brings me the greatest joy.
