Petroleum refineries convert crude oil and other liquids into many petroleum products that people use every day. To refine the crude oil a three-step process involving separation, conversion and treatment occurs through complex processes. The UK has six refineries currently, one located in Scotland in Grangemouth and five located in England: Fawley in Southampton, Ellesmere in Chesire, North Lincolnshire and North Killingholme in North Lincolnshire.
